REPORTS FROM IRAQ

Before leaving for the United Nations gathering in New York, Prime Minister Abadi announced that Iraq has established intelligence cooperation with several countries, including Russia, to fight Daesh. He noted that the many Russian citizens fighting with Daesh will be threat to Russia if they return. He also says Iraq is cooperating with other countries like Germany and Jordan. A Russian military source said on Saturday that Russia, Iraq, Syria and Iran will establish an intelligence center in Baghdad with military representatives from the four countries. [Sumaria

[Mada] The Coalition and the American Embassy in Baghdad also denied the reports. The Commander of the Iraqi 7th Division had said on Sunday that Coalition rocket launchers participated in the battles in Anbar. [Sumaria]

Ramadi

Iraq War Media Cell reports that Iraqi forces, supported by IAA helicopters and Coalition aircraft, advanced north of Ramadi, killing many terrorists, destroying 20 Daesh sites, 6 vehicles, 2 motorcycles and 2 mortars, and defusing 60 IEDs. [IWMC Report]

However, the Army’s Acting Chief of Staff, visiting the Anbar Operations Command, talked about a halt in military operations north of Ramadi. This decision was explained vaguely as intended to provide the “needs” of the Anbar Operations Command and 10th Army Division. [MoD Website]  (This perhaps includes weapons and supplies.)

Adding to the confusion, local sources say Iraqi forces were deployed to attack Ramadi center in the coming days. Meanwhile, heavy clashes erupted between the Iraqi forces and Daesh in Albu Dhiab and Hamdhiya, north of Ramadi. [Gharbiya]

DaeshDaily comment: Within the takfiri theology, any mosque that has writings on the walls, like Quranic verses, is pagan. Sometimes they destroy the whole mosque, especially if it has a grave, and sometimes they just destroy the walls and the writings.

Elsewhere in Anbar

A member of the Human Rights Committee in the Iraqi CoR says the Committee visited several prisons in Iraq and documented many human rights abuses, including getting confessions under torture. She also says some people have been under arrest for 4 years or more without court orders. [Erem]

DaeshDaily comment: This information is not surprising at all. It is dangerous to be an inmate in many Iraqi prisons despite ongoing efforts to clean up the system. Abuse of prisoners is also counter-productive. It is well established by now that life in Iraqi prisons has radicalized many men, some later prominent in Al-Qaeda and Daesh, and the Iraqi government hasn’t done a lot to address this problem.

The Chairman of the Security and Defense Committee in the CoR says his Committee sent reports to the PM, the MoD and to the Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council about some corrupt and ineffective military and security commanders but nothing has been done so far. [Gharbiya]

DaeshDaily comment. Military clashes in this area have been few, so why now? A Daesh effort to weaken government pressure on Falluja just to the west is one speculative possibility.

Overall in the past 24 hours, the IAF conducted 19 sorties and the IAA 24.

The Coalition conducted 29 sorties, killing many terrorists and destroying 4 vehicles and 39 Daesh sites. [IWMC Report]

DaeshDaily comment: Three years in prison doesn’t seem like an adequate sentence for killing Iraqi citizens. This guy just waited out the time and joined Daesh. Giving light punishment to terrorists and then letting them go back to their countries can be counter-productive.
