One of the criminals who participated in the Speicher massacre says he killed 60 cadets that day. He is from a Shia family but joined radical groups starting in the mid-1990s. He says he returned to Basra after committing the crime but was caught by the security force there. [Al-Mada]

DaeshDaily comment. During the 1990s Saddam kept an eye on the takfiri groups in Baghdad and in Sunni areas but he gave them a lot of freedom in Shia areas. Takfiri are Salafis of the Sunni sect who hold that all who don’t follow their interpretation, Muslims and non-Muslims, are not believers and should be killed. Their cult has been the inspiration for jihadist groups, Daesh and Al-Qaeda included.

Takfiri mosques were established even in the Shia heartland in Kerbala and Najaf under the protection of Saddam’s faith campaign. They started to get conversions from young men and women from Shia families, and some were sent outside Iraq for further radical training. These people became more valuable after 2003 when AQI announced itself officially in Iraq. With their Shia names and contacts they were able to infiltrate Shia communities and deceive the security agencies. They provided AQI, and later Daesh, with information and hideouts and participated in hundreds of terrorist attacks on Shia civilians in Baghdad and southern Iraq.

The Chairman of the Security and Defense Committee in the Iraqi Parliament says Coalition pilots from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan and Qatar are targeting Iraqi forces in coordination with Daesh.  Several PMF commanders have said the Coalition is hindering the Iraqi forces’ advances. [Al-Mada]

DaeshDaily comment. Some Shia politicians and PMF commanders previously accused American pilots of dropping supplies to and supporting Daesh. This is another version of the same lie. No excuses for the Chairman, however.

The rapporteur of the of Security and Defense Committee in the Iraqi Parliament, a Kurdish MP, says that according to the agreement between the Iraqi government and the US, the F-16s will  fly in military missions only with a Kurdish pilot. [Rudaw]

DIYALA

A Diyala investigative judge says a member of the security checkpoint in Khan Bani Saad admitted he helped the car bomb to enter the area. The suspect says Daesh threatened to kill him and his family if he didn’t cooperate. The judge also says the Khan Bani Saad police chief admitted he got information about Daesh’s intentions to attack the city with a car bomb days before the incident.

DaeshDaily comment. The obvious fact, despite all the checkpoints suffocating the citizens’ movements, is that Daesh is still able to hit anywhere with car bombs and IEDs. They could not do that without support from members of the security forces, motivated by corruption or ideological reasons.

Daesh says one of its suicide bombers attacked the Kurdish forces in Hasaka. [Come to Success]

DaeshDaily comment. The surprising recent gains by the YPG against Daesh around Hasaka are intriguing. This may have something to do with implied cooperation between the Syrian government and the Kurds, but we also observe that Daesh seems less active lately in Syria.
