REPORTS FROM IRAQ

NATIONAL NEWS

Prime Minister Abadi met with the Italian Minister of Defense to discuss military and security cooperation and the logistics for the Italian company that is renovating the Mosul Dam, and the deployment of Italian troops near the Dam for security. [Sumaria] [Buratha]

A Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve service member died as a result of a non-battle related injury in Iraq.  [InherentResolve]

The Combined Joint Task Force says the Coalition conducted 16 airstrikes in Iraq; in Anbar near Baghdadi, Albu Hayat, Hit, Habbaniya, and especially Falluja (5); in Baiji; and near Mosul (3), Sultan Abdullah (2), and Kasik. [CJTF]

The Joint Operations Command (JOC) says the IAF conducted 20 sorties and the IAA 40. It also says Coalition airstrikes killed 34 Daesh terrorists and destroyed a vehicle bomb, 12 rocket launchers, a hideout, a tunnel, and 2 mortar units. [Harbi]

Saraya Al-Salam, the Sadrist militia, says 10,000 of its fighters will participate in the Mosul liberation under the condition that foreign forces remain uninvolved. [Buratha]

DaeshDaily comment. Statements like this are one reason for the reluctance to involve Shia militias in the Ninewa liberation campaign. No serious military officer or analyst thinks Mosul will be retaken without Coalition bombing support at the least. However, there is a felt political requirement to oppose American involvement in Iraq, partly to please Iran, and to undermine Al-Abadi, seen correctly as relying on American and European help. Any value from the Sadrists’ 10,000 men could be negated by the citizen hostility to the government for letting them into the liberation campaign.

BAGHDAD

Security-related incidents reported

Northwest (Khadimiya)

An MoI source says an armed gang killed a taxi driver and stole his vehicle in the predominantly Shia Shula area. [Mada]

DaeshDaily comment. This is not an uncommon scenario in the Daesh period. The gang is not likely going into the taxi business, but is more likely acquiring a vehicle that could be rigged later as a vehicle bomb. The poor taxi driver was just collateral damage.

An MoI source says an IED exploded near a commercial area in predominantly Shia Tobchi, killing two people and wounding six. [Mada]

Total Baghdad incidents reported:   21    (Includes only incidents reported)

ANBAR

Falluja

A member of the security committee in Anbar Provincial Council refuted reports of a secret prison supposedly located in Ameriyat Al-Falluja. He says there are no such prisons in the entire governorate. There are 1,200 prisoners in Anbar, none are women or children, and all of them were imprisoned after an arrest warrant. Amnesty International claimed, based on its Iraqi sources, that such a prison existed and PM Abadi that an investigation be opened. [Sumaria]

The West Baghdad Operations Commander says security operations have stopped in Anbar because of the weather conditions. [Mawazin] Some military action preceded this announcement, however.

Iraqi Sukhois also bombed Daesh in Ameriyat Al-Falluja, killing 20 terrorists and destroying 10 vehicles. [Sumaria]

Daesh says it rocketed Iraqi soldiers and Sahwa fighters in the Al-Salam intersection with 3 locally made rockets, killing or wounding several of them. [JustPaste]

DaeshDaily comment. Notice that Daesh focuses attention on what its terrorists did, not on the outcome of the battle, which was apparently another defeat. Daesh is always victorious (even when it loses).

The spokesman of the Ameriyat Al-Falluja PMFs says Iraqi forces killed 13 Daesh terrorists and destroyed 3 mortar units and a vehicle bomb in the Albu Hawa and Heraimat areas in Ameriyat Al-Falluja. He says Iraqi forces are clearing areas south and west of Falluja and are preparing for a major military operation to reach the Falluja Bridge and Falluja Dam. [Mada]

Ramadi

The Mayor of Ramadi says security forces found the documents of the Directorate of Property Registration. He says Daesh terrorists had moved the documents from Ramadi to Hit. [Harbi]

DaeshDaily comment. Daesh stole a lot of houses belonging to its enemies and gave them to Daesh members and supporters, and stole the registrations to make sure the chaos will continue after it leaves.

Rutba/Western Anbar

A member of the Anbar Provincial Council say Daesh is smuggling food supplies, fuel, weapons, and ammunitions from Raqqa and Bukamal (by the Syrian border) to Al-Qa’im. He asked the Iraqi security forces to clear the Iraq-Syria border in order to cut off supply lines. [Mada]

DaeshDaily comment. This looks like a small story in strategic terms. It probably isn’t.

The IWMC says the reports about Daesh killing Shakir Wahyib were not true. Military sources last week said the notorious Daesh leader was killed by an airstrike in Rutba. Daesh says it destroyed the electricity towers in the area, which provide electricity from Taza to Al-Daur, Baiji, and Al-Alam. [JustPaste]

Daesh says one of its Iraqi suicide terrorists attacked a “PMF gathering” in Shifta, killing or wounding more than fifty fighters. [JustPaste]

DaeshDaily comment. Daesh’s propaganda is nothing if not consistent. Every bomb is explained as an attack on Shia militias, reinforcing its propaganda line that Daesh is the protector of Sunnis. In reality, its bombs are more often non-sectarian and Daesh in general has killed more Sunnis than Shia.

The IWMC says Iraqi planes dropped “millions” of leaflets on Mosul, containing instructions and information about the Mosul Dam emergency plan. No details were provided in the story. [Baghdadia]

A source in Ninewa Governorate says the central government will transfer 40 billion ID (around 33 million dollars) next week to the provincial government (currently in Erbil) to pay companies that implemented projects in Mosul before Daesh captured the city. [BasNews]

DaeshDaily comment. Putting in mind that no project was implemented in Mosul (even well before June 2014) without giving a large percentage to people later revealed as associated with Daesh, we can’t figure out how these payments will be implemented without having a substantial portion going to Daesh.

Northwest (Tal Afar, Sinjar)

Daesh publishes photos of the barley harvest season in Tal Afar. [JustPaste]

DaeshDaily comment. The Iraqi government buys grains from farmers at subsidized prices. We don’t know how much Daesh is paying but we suspect it’s as high as the government. But it might not be that high for “farmers” who stole the lands of minorities in the Ninewa areas. Also, according to many reports, Daesh grains are being sold to the government through corrupt officials.

DaeshDaily comment. That is a very high number of people who want to join terrorist organizations from a relatively small country like Tunisia within such a short time period. This report shows that the Daesh and Al-Qaeda propaganda is working.
