REPORTS FROM IRAQ

NATIONAL NEWS

Major-General Gary Volesky, Commander of the Combined Joint Forces’ Land Component Command, says Daesh lost a lot of its power in Iraq and these days it cannot generate large operations. He says Daesh needs a two- to three-week cycle after it does an operation just to generate enough combat power to maintain relevance. He says Daesh used to attack with 50, 60, 70 fighters, but now it only uses five to eight, maybe 15, with a vehicle bomb associated. But even that depends on the local area where they are operating. Daesh in the Mosul area, where it has had two years to build up and has a larger force, can project its power in the local area much quicker than in other areas like Qayara.

Volesky says Daesh has lost the capability to coordinate military resources between the Tigris basin and the Euphrates basin and it has to deal with them as two separate battlefronts now. [Ghad]

Here Daesh says it destroyed 3 tanks in the attack. [A3maq]

Daesh’s version says it attacked Iraqi forces, beginning with a vehicle bomb in the Albu Aitha, Albu Farraj, and Jaraishi areas. Daesh says it killed more than 35 Iraqi soldiers and destroyed an armored vehicle, a Humvee, and a bulldozer. Daesh says it captured Albu Aitha and Albu Farraj and the battles are ongoing. [JustPaste]

DaeshDaily comment. We don’t quite believe Daesh’s version, but the whole episode shows again that Iraq has failed to finish the job in Ramadi and is now having to fight for places it already holds. The sudden obstacles in Ramadi also complicate the campaign to retake Falluja.

Daesh publishes photos of its sharia seminars, mostly for young boys, in west Anbar. [JustPaste]

DaeshDaily comment. Most of Daesh’s recent suicide terrorists have “graduated” from such seminars. This shows the danger of leaving an organization like Daesh in control of any area.

NINEWA

A PUK official says Coalition warplanes bombed Daesh in several areas in Ninewa, killing 13 including 2 local commanders. [PUKMedia]

Abdul Tahman Al-Luwaizi, an Arab MP from Ninewa, accused the KDP of not allowing the Arab residents of the liberated areas in Ninewa to return to their houses, in order to merge these areas to the KRG and that the Peshmerga are destroying Arab villages and farms. He also says the KDP informed the Arab farmers in the Rabia area to deliver their harvest to the KRG instead of the Iraqi government. A Kurdish MP responded by saying Luwaizi’s statement was meant to instill conflict between Arabs and Kurds, and diminishes the KDP’s role in helping the IDPs from Ninewa and its role in the fight against Daesh.

[DorarIraq] [Xendan]

DaeshDaily comment. What Luwaizi’s statement does most of all is to expose the extent to which the KDP has usurped KRG authority for itself and usurped Iraq’s authority in Ninewa.

Mosul

A local source in Mosul says Daesh cut the feet off of 20 of its terrorists who fled the battles in Kubruk using a custom machine. [Buratha]

DaeshDaily comment. Several times Daesh previously published photos of cutting off the feet of some of its terrorists because they had fled battles, but it no longer publishes them.

Daesh issued a video yesterday of publicly executing five people accused of “spying” in Mosul. Daesh used “volunteers” from the crowd to execute the victims. Local sources say that these “volunteers” were actually members of the Daesh executioners’ families. [PUKMedia]

A JOC source says Coalition warplanes bombed Daesh in Ayadhiya subdistrict, killing 2 terrorists and destroying 3 combat locations. [Harbi]

KURDISTAN

The Gorran leader, Nawshirwan Mustafa, met in his residence with the PYD president, Saleh Muslim, who asked Mustafa to support the YPG in Syria. He also met with a Kurdish delegation from Turkey. Mustafa said he supports federalism in Syria and criticized the KDP’s efforts to interfere in the Kurdish areas there. [Rudaw] [Hawar]

DaeshDaily comment. The major internal leadership crisis continues in the KRG, most of it surrounding Masoud Barzani, but it does not get reported much. Meanwhile, Barzani seems at times like the only and unchallenged spokesman for the KRG on military matters, even though his official term of office is long since expired. This is one of the few times when his policy (and implicitly Erdogan’s policy) has been directly challenged by another Kurdish political leader.

SOUTHERN IRAQ

Babel

A member of the security committee in Babel provincial council says the MoD’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal defused 400 booby-trapped houses in Jurf Al-Sakhar areas since they were liberated, but there are still more. He says there are hundreds of IEDs in the area, requesting international support and minesweepers to clear the land and initiate the return of displaced families. [BasNews] SG Babel

DaeshDaily comment. Another important reason for the delay in allowing the return of displaced families is the lack of tribal solutions regarding the victims of Daesh and compensation for their destroyed houses and properties. Some Sunni politicians are saying that there is an ethnic cleansing in north Babel, while failing to recognize the same problems are happening in Sunni areas, like Ramadi. People just won’t allow Daesh terrorists’ families to go back.

Basra

The Criminal Court in Basra sentenced 3 terrorists, responsible for an attack on a police station in Muqdadiya that killed 14 policemen in Muqdadiya in 2006, to death. [Sumaria]
