BAGHDAD

PM Abadi issued a statement saying he held an urgent meeting with the Minister of Electricity and his staff Friday evening in Baghdad and discussed electricity issues. The PM urged them to give more efforts to solve the power problems and fight corruption. He also thanked the demonstrators for their civilized behavior and for not disturbing the general order and asked the Iraqi officials to go out to the field more and listen to the citizens. [Al-Mada]

Hundreds of people demonstrated in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities against the government over electricity and other services.  Shia clerics, including Sistani, criticized the government’s performance in Friday prayers. With the current heat wave and the general anger in the country, the demonstrations could easily escalate.

Some sources talk about a move led by vice president Ayad Allawi and the Sadrists to replace Prime Minister Abadi.

DaeshDaily comment. The usual political maneuvering aside, continuing demonstrations could weaken the government. The inadequate electricity service is a seemingly permanent issue from before the fall of Saddam, and a long-standing embarrassment to successive governments, and it can’t be solved quickly because expanding electricity service hours is necessarily a long-term and expensive project.
