Total Baghdad incidents reported:   11    (Not an overall total)

The US Army said Coalition warplanes initiated 12 attacks in Iraq and 7 in Syria. Attacks in Iraq targeted 8 cities, destroying rocket launching platforms and fighting positions. [Sumaria]

ANBAR

Falluja

Col. Jumaa Al-Jumaili, commander of the popular mobilization in Falluja, said that unidentified armed men killed 9 Daesh terrorists in the Nazzal, Andalus, and Shuhada neighborhoods of downtown Falluja, using guns with silencers and knives. [Maalomah]

Army Aviation helicopters destroyed an anti-aircraft gun in Al-Askari neighborhood, in east Falluja city, a security source said.

Anbar Operations Command (AOC) said army forces repelled a Daesh attack with four car bombs on Iraqi army forces at Al-Maftoul crossing in Saqlawiya, north of Falluja. Soldiers fired at the cars and set them on fire, AOC said. [Mada]

Ali Al-Dulaimi, Chairman of Khaldiya subdistrict council, said that a military campaign was initiated to liberate areas west of Falluja, including Al-Nassaf and Falahat train station, after cutting off all Daesh supply lines to Falluja. He said “tens” of Daesh terrorists including foreign leaders were killed in the operation, although the advance is rather slow due to the large number of booby traps and IEDs in the area. [Maalomah]

Albu Hawa tribe engaged Daesh in a fierce battle south of Falluja that left 9 civilians and several Daesh terrorists dead. The fighting started after Daesh killed one of the tribesmen when the tribe demanded that Daesh to leave their area following the shooting down of an Iraqi helicopter by Daesh in Albu Daaij in Falluja. This was reported by a member of the subdistrict council of Ameriyat Al-Falluja. [Maalomah]

Army units killed 3 terrorists and found a weapons cache in search operations in Bustan Al-Tikriti south of Falluja, the MoD said. [Maalomah]

Daesh says it executed a “spy” in Falluja. The victim allegedly gave information to his brother (a policeman in Ameriyat Al-Falluja) about Daesh locations. [A3maq]

DaeshDaily comment. This is another Baathist tactic. The entire family of an enemy (in this case a policeman not under Daesh control) is an enemy. The charge could be entirely false. Saddam executed thousands of people just because their family members were against him.

Ramadi

AOC says a big operation to liberate Jazeera Al-Khaldiya is underway. The operation was preceded by a heavy shelling by Coalition warplanes on the Albu Obeid area east of Falluja. Targeted areas are already under siege. [Maalomah]

Hit/Haditha

Three versions of the same battle in the Kilo 35 area between Ramadi and Hit:

Muhannad Zabbar, Mayor of Hit District, said Coalition warplanes killed 10 Daesh terrorists and destroyed 3 pick-up trucks, while army troops killed 8 attackers who had explosives belts in the Kilo 35 area west of Ramadi. [Baghdadia]

Major General Ali Ibrahim Daba’on, commander of Jazeera Operations, said IFP troops repelled an attack on the headquarters of the 3rd battalion of its 18th IFP brigade in the Kilo 35 area west of Ramadi. However, the Commander of the battalion, Col. Ali Al-Mohammedawi, was killed. [Sumaria]

Daesh says a group of its terrorists attacked the headquarters, then 4 of the attackers detonated their explosives vests killing “almost everyone in it.” Daesh says when the army reinforcements arrived in the area they fell into a Daesh mine field and 2 Humvees were destroyed. Daesh also says it rocketed nearby Iraqi Army positions with Katyushas. [JustPaste]

The Mayor says the liberation of Hit is very close, and that the army is already working on opening safe roots for its population. [Baghdadia] The Mayor says “extensive” meetings were held in Ain Al-Assad base between local Anbar officials, military commanders and the Coalition to discuss Hit liberation. He says preparations are ongoing to secure roads for the civilians to leave the city preparing for the battles. [Mada]

The IWMC said that the Iraqi Air Force executed two airstrikes on Hit district. The first strike targeted a car bombing workshop, destroying it completely and killing 30 terrorists, while the second targeted eight Daesh vehicles including two car bombs in an orchard in Al-Bakr neighborhood north of Hit. [Ghad]

Daesh says 2 civilians were killed and 5 wounded in a Coalition airstrike on Hit. [A3maq]

Two versions, same battle:

General Daba’on also reported that army and tribal fighters killed 6 Daesh suicide bombers equipped with explosive belts who attacked the army’s line of defense in Sakran village north of Haditha. [Sumaria]

Daesh says 3 of its terrorists attacked an Iraqi forces location between Sakran and Haditha Dam before detonating their explosives vests and killing at least 20 soldiers and wounding many others. Daesh also says it shelled Iraqi forces with Grad rockets and heavy artillery in their positions in the College of Education compound near the dam, killing 14 soldiers. Daesh says the college is used to train (tribal) PMFs. [A3maq]

Western Anbar

The men were beheaded on charges of putting anti-Daesh writings on the walls of Hawija and facilitating the escape of families from the city. [Sumaria]

An explosion destroyed an abandoned oil pipe in Mara’i village in Dibis District, a security source said, causing the spilling of the oil left in the pipe. Reason for the explosion is unknown. The fire department controlled the resulting fire. [Mada]

A security source says the Peshmerga moved 35 families who escaped from Daesh controlled areas in Hawija to a displaced persons camp in Kirkuk. [Mada]

A local source says two girls committed suicide after Daesh forced them to marry two of its terrorists. Daesh created a database for unmarried girls in areas it controls and put harsh rules on them to force them to marry its terrorists. A women’s rights activist said the suicide rate among women has increased 20% in Daesh-controlled areas. [Sumaria]

DaeshDaily comment. Since 2003, when Abdulla Al-Janabi, head of the shura “mujahedeen” council in Falluja, issued orders to force Iraqi girls (mostly orphans or with no tribal protection) to marry foreign terrorists, we have witnessed hundreds of cases of children who were born to Iraqi mothers whom “husbands” were killed as suicide bombers. The problem after Daesh will be even bigger.

NINEWA

Mosul

An MP from Ninewa says in a press conference in the CoR building that Daesh will execute 3,000 civilians in the coming days. He says Daesh has executed 1,065 people recently and asks the government to start Mosul operations quickly to prevent such a massacre. [Sumaria]

DaeshDaily comment. It is impossible to evaluate this report. On its own terms, it’s frightening. However, the 1,065 figure came from the discredited spokesman for the separatist National Mobilization. We also notice that false stories are being circulated in Mosul against Daesh. Impossible to ignore, however, is that the delay in retaking Mosul has given Daesh time to execute an accelerating number of people as its anxiety grows. The growing risk to civilians in this situation is a matter of grave concern.

Daesh executed three female employees of the Independent High Electoral Commission in downtown Mosul, the Commission said in a statement. [Shafaq]

DaeshDaily comment. Daesh has treated IHEC employees with particular cruelty, earlier executing 300 employees.

A Ninewa police source says Daesh arrested 26 families who were trying to enter Mosul, coming from Qayara. Daesh is preventing families from Qayara from leaving in order to use them as human shields when the Iraqi forces’ attack starts. [BasNews]

A security source says 15 Daesh terrorists were killed and 35 wounded in Coalition airstrikes on a Daesh headquarters in the Ghabat area northeast of Mosul. [Sumaria]

After the first IED wounded the two, their fellow soldiers came to the rescue; then the second exploded, killing the other seven according to a Peshmerga source. The source says the soldiers were heading to Hardan village. [Shafaq]

REPORTS FROM TURKEY

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has alleged that the PKK and its Syrian affiliate the YPG were behind yesterday’s deadly attack in central Ankara that killed 28 people. The PYD, the Syrian Kurdish political movement affiliated with the YPG, denied any involvement in the attack, as has the YPG itself.

PM Davutoglu alleged that yesterday’s deadly attack in central Ankara was implemented by a 23-year-old Syrian national named Salih Najjar, apparently based on analysis of body parts found at the scene. Najjar is said to have entered Turkey with the flow of refugees and was not on any list of wanted persons in Turkey, according to Turkish investigators.

Twenty of those killed in the blast were military personnel of various ranks, Turkish President Erdogan said. The President announced that the attack in Ankara had increased his country’s resolve to make war on those who stood behind the attack. Turkish police conducted arrest raids in seven cities in after the blast, detaining 14 suspects, he added, saying that the arrest raids could continue.

REPORTS FROM SYRIA

Northeast (Hasaka, Raqqa)

The Syrian military announced the launch of its campaign to seize the city of Raqqa from Daesh, according to media reports. The attack began on several fronts a week ago, the Army said, and Syrian troops have reportedly advanced 6.5 km (4 miles) into the Raqqa Governorate. [Arabi21]

The Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) backed by Coalition air support seized several villages in the Hasaka countryside in heavy fighting with Daesh over the last two days, the SDF spokesman has said. The SDF also announced that it had captured a section of the main road linking Shaddadi to Mosul in Iraq, cutting the supply link between the two Daesh strongholds. The SDF has also launched a campaign to take the city of Shaddadi from Daesh control, the militia alliance announced in a statement issued on Thursday. [ARA] [ARA] [Hawar] [Hawar]

Hawar also reports that Turkish troops crossed 300 meters into Syria to the village of Qarmatlaq, located in the subdistrict of Shih in Afrin, north of Aleppo, and cut down hundreds of olive trees belonging to the Kurdish villagers. The report refers to 1,000 trees in one place and 300 in another. (photos). [Hawar]

The YPG-allied Revolutionaries Army (RA) militia spokesman has alleged that Turkey facilitated hundreds of fighters, mostly from the Islamist factions, to enter Syria at the Bab Al-Salama crossing. The spokesman also said that Turkey has continued to shell the northern Aleppo countryside in what he described as a haphazard fashion. He also added that the RA had released Ahrar Al-Sham prisoners captured during the recent fighting for control of Tal Rifaat and Menagh. [Welati]

Aleppo East

Neighboring countries

Saudi Arabia. 350,000 troops from 20 Islamic states are participating in the “North Thunder” maneuvers in Saudi Arabia, marking the largest such exercise in the history of the Middle East region. Analysts suggest that the maneuvers are intended to send a clear message of Saudi resolve to the kingdom’s regional rivals including Iran and the Syrian Assad regime (photos). [Erem]

Participating in the Saudi-led maneuvers are the following states: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritania, Djibouti, Comoros, Pakistan, Malaysia, Mauritius, Senegal, Chad, and the Maldives. [Wikipedia]

North Africa

Egypt

Egyptian joint forces surrounded an Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis cell in the Jihad Abu Tabal area south of Sheikh Zuweid Wednesday evening, sparking heavy fighting that lasted two hours and resulted in the death of eight militants of the Daesh-affiliated group, security sources said. Egyptian Apache helicopters rocketed three different gatherings of Ansar members while security troops attacked from the ground, killing another eleven Ansar members and wounding 32 others, in three villages in North Sinai, according to security sources. Investigators looking into the recent attack that killed a policeman in Giza have found that the assault took place at the Mizan checkpoint in the Al-Maraziq area of Al-Badrashin in Giza governorate. Three masked attackers carried out the attack before stealing the victim’s weapons and fleeing the scene, investigators say. Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Egyptian authorities reportedly suspect the involvement of a militant group that “has adopted Daesh’s thinking.” The investigators have fingered the attackers as belonging to the same network that has attacked other police in Giza in the past, striking last month in the Al-Manawat area, and possibly associated with a recent deadly explosion in an apartment in Giza. [ElWatan]

DaeshDaily comment: Adopting Daesh’s thinking and belonging to the organization are two different things, as we learned from the recent shooting attack in San Bernardino, California.

Libya

Local sources confirm that Daesh has retreated from some of the areas it held in the “400” neighborhood of Derna, falling back past the Public Works headquarters in the city, which the sources described as a strategic point which is now in the hands of locally based militias who fought pitched battles with Daesh earlier in the week. Daesh retains control of parts of the neighborhood south of the city’s eastern waterfront. [Arabiya]

Daesh says one of its snipers killed a Libyan soldier in the Dawwar Al-Shajara area in Benghazi. Daesh also says it detonated an IED in the same area, killing a soldier and wounding another. [JustPaste]

The Tripoli-based government has ordered its fighters to target Daesh in Sirte, according to Khalifa Al-Ghweil, Prime Minister of the Tripoli government. Ghweil said that in his capacity as defense minister of the government he had ordered his military staff chiefs to begin operations to dislodge Sirte from Daesh control. Ghweil called on “all revolutionaries in [all] Libyan cities to travel towards Sirte and join the operations room that was established to command military operations against Daesh.” [Arabiya]

Daesh has deployed its fighters throughout the streets of Sirte, residents say. New checkpoints have been installed over the last two days and armed Daesh vehicles are reported on all three sides of the coastal city. Amid growing tensions with Misrata-based militias, Daesh’s local broadcasts threatened Misrata with an approaching “zero hour,” saying Misrata would face suicide attacks. The broadcast also forbade Sirte residents from celebrating the anniversary of Col. Muammar Qaddafi’s downfall as president of Libya, saying anyone found taking part in celebrations of the anniversary of Libya’s 2011 revolution would face “merciless punishment.” [Wasat]

Algeria. Algeria is installing 100 new surveillance stations along its border with Libya, a length of 900 km (560 miles), according to the country’s police commander. Relatedly, a meeting of the government’s high security council, chaired by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, decided to keep the country’s border with Libya closed indefinitely, and that Algiers would close its border with Tunisia temporarily in the event of an anticipated international intervention in Libya. [Tunisien] [Tunisien]

Other countries

Yemen. Daesh publishes photos of targeting a Yemeni Army position in Shabam in Hadhramaut. [JustPaste]

Russia. Moscow has raised the human rights situation in Yemen at the United Nations in a bid to persuade Riyadh to reverse its apparent decision to intervene in Syria, according to one line of analysis which questions whether the Russian strategy involves trading Saudi acceptance of Russian-Iranian intervention in Syria for Russian acceptance of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing war in Yemen.
