A State of Law MP says more than 100 MPs formed a new opposition political front in order to counter sectarianism and to question any official who doesn’t do the job. He also says the Prime Minister is free to choose any candidates for the cabinet without political pressure. [Sumaria]

DaeshDaily comment. Does this mean Iraq will finally have a real oppositions? That’s good news if true. We will judge by the results as to whether Al-Abadi can make cabinet choices without political pressure.

Security developments

General Joe Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Thursday “We’re bombing (Daesh), and we’re going to take out their internet and so forth as well. The goal was to cut off the jihadists’ lines of communication.” He also said “The overall effect we’re trying to achieve is virtual isolation. And this complements very much our physical actions on the ground, and the particular focus is external operations that might be conducted by (Daesh).” [AlArabi]

DaeshDaily comment. We noticed that A3maq, one of Daesh’s main mouthpieces has just been shut down, most likely as part of this initiative. It’s a good move to isolate Daesh from its wider audience, (even though this makes our job at Daesh Daily more difficult). Today we had to get A3maq “news” from a different source.

Daesh says it killed an Iraqi Army “source” in Tarmiya. [JustPaste]

DaeshDaily comment. Daesh is killing many Sunni Iraqis on different accusations like being Sahwa fighters or Army “sources.” Some of these accusations might be true, and the vast majority of Iraqi Sunnis are against Daesh, but Daesh is just killing any Sunni who opposes them or refuses to pay them extortion money.

DaeshDaily comment. Many Iraqi girls married foreign terrorists since 2003, forcibly most of the time. And many of these terrorists were killed, leaving the wives pregnant or with young kids, and with an uncertain future.

Hit/Kubaisa/Baghdadi

The Anbar police chief says 2 Daesh suicide terrorists hiding in a nearby mosque attacked the Kubaisa police station. He says the police clashed with the terrorists, killing both of them. However, he also says a policeman was killed and another wounded in the attack. [IraqPress]

However, the Jazeera Operations Commander’s report says 1 suicide terrorist wearing an explosives vest was hiding in a tunnel near the police station and was killed by the security forces. He says Iraqi forces didn’t sustain any casualties. [Sumaria] A tribal PMF commander confirmed the killing of 2 Daesh terrorists near the Kubaisa police station, and said no Iraqi security personnel were killed during the attack. [Maalomah]

Daesh’s version says 4 of its suicide terrorists attacked the Kubaisa police station and clashed with Iraqi forces there. Then, 2 terrorists detonated their explosive vests, killing 50 soldiers and officers. Daesh says the remaining 2 terrorists returned safely. [JustPaste]

Daesh publishes photos of the 2 Iraqi suicide terrorists who attacked the Kubaisa police station. [JustPaste]

DaeshDaily comment. These reports show the difficulties we face trying to extract accurate information even from Iraqi military sources. They also show the Daesh’s technique of leaving terrorists hidden in deserted buildings or rat tunnels for days or weeks in order to attack later. Daesh used this technique in Tikrit and Ramadi and other places, and most likely it will use it again. The add-on story about their two terrorists who returned safely is typical creative writing intended to hide the truth.

Dissecting this story reveals a basic tactic in Daesh propaganda. They attacked with two suicide bombers and lost, with both getting killed. However, the fact that they died is interpreted to mean they set off their vests (even if the government soldiers get them first), which is by definition a good thing. Daesh’s version almost always says their heroic suicide bombers killed many enemy soldiers (even if they killed no one), and typically they report that one or more terrorists returned safely, which also gives the impression of success (even though no one returned safely). These made-up versions serve to reinforce the common propaganda theme that “Daesh is always victorious” (even when it loses). Daesh has been losing a lot, but those who follow Daesh media are told after each defeat that Daesh has scored another victory.

DIYALA

A Diyala Sahwa leader says the government decided to decrease the number of “Daughters of Iraq”, female Sahwa members, 50%. He says there are 90 women in Diyala who joined the DoI and they and their families made a lot of sacrifices in the war on terrorism. He asks the government to reconsider the decision. [Sumaria]

DaeshDaily comment. Yesterday the government discovered the names of Daesh female recruits in Diyala, and today it decided to downsize the number of its own recruits? Does Daesh really understand the role of women better than the Iraqi government? Really?

He also says the Sahwa fighters in Diyala postponed a demonstration they intended to have for security reasons. They are objecting the 50% downsize of their own ranks. [Sumaria]

A member of Diyala PC says Iran cut off the electricity it provides to Diyala because the Ministry of Electricity didn’t pay the bill. [Sumaria]

A member of the in Ninewa PC’s security committee says they have heard of assassination operations against Daesh inside Mosul, but have no official information concerning armed movements against Daesh. [Maalomah]

Kata’eb Al-Mosul says it killed a Daesh terrorist in Hay Al-Mithaq on the east side of Mosul.

[KM Facebook Page]

Local sources say Daesh is forcing people who live in governmental residential compounds in Mosul to pay rent or leave. These people paid the Iraqi government for these houses, and therefore became the rightful owners, but since they did not pay Daesh, it chooses to consider this as “caliphate property.” [Karemlash]

KURDISTAN

A senior PUK official says the Kurdish political parties have an agreement regarding the proposed referendum on independence. He says that if Iraqi implements democracy and federalism the right way and solves people’s problems, then the Kurds have no problems with Iraq. He also says the Kurds have the right to vote on their fate if the problems in Iraq continue. [Rudaw]

DaeshDaily comment. We hardly know where to begin with this one. The statement reflects the well-refined Kurdish talent for seeming to explain issues while actually obfuscating them. However, our take on the story is somewhat different.

We have actually been anticipating some kind of announcement like this, in part because of the number of high-profile US visitors to Baghdad and Erbil recently. We suspect the real explanation for Barzani’s independence referendum being shelved for now is a blunt American message conveyed only slightly within the guidelines of diplomatic language to “stuff” this referendum. The obvious reason is that the war against Daesh is still ongoing, making national unity all important, now as it was before.

Based on past behavior, once the Daesh crisis is over, certain Kurdish leaders will discover to their professed disappointment that Iraq has not implemented democracy and federalism “the right way” and has failed to solve people’s problems, and that this justifies Kurdish independence.

We think the future of Iraqi-Kurdish relations is of utmost importance, and that there are many huge territorial and other issues that must be resolved, whether or not Kurdistan becomes independent, and that none of them will be resolved by press releases from Erbil or Suleimaniya. Mutual resolution of those issues will require a much greater willingness to compromise than has been demonstrated so far, and also require strong leadership by the US, the only realistic mediator, as they will not be solved otherwise.

A KDP senior advisor says a delegation of Kurdish parties will visit Baghdad soon to discuss all the issues between Baghdad in Erbil. He also says it is important that the Kurds, the second major group in Iraq and an essential partner in the political process, go to Baghdad with a unified position. [BasNews]

Another security source says IEDs exploded near the MP’s office in Kut, wounding one of his bodyguards. [Sumaria]

A video of the explosion in Kut [YouTube]

DaeshDaily Comment. This esteemed MP was involved in several incidents, including attacking a military commander, and an MP, shooting at another MP in a TV station after an on-air discussion, and lately attacking Prime Minister Abadi at the CoR a couple of days ago, before being restrained by the PM’s bodyguards. He used to be a Sadrist but Al-Ahrar considered him too violent (and beat him up once), so he joined Maliki’s bloc. He joined the CoR sit-in, but he might have gone too far in criticizing the Sadrists this time. Or maybe he just staged the whole thing to attract media attention.

Reports also include claims that Suzan B. was a militant of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and crossed the border into Syria to fight in Kobane in the ranks of the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Turkey considers a terrorist organization and an offshoot of the PKK.
However, reports about the suicide bomber’s identity have yet to be confirmed and no official statement has been made regarding the terror organization behind the attack. [Hurriyat]

Security sources say the YPG foiled a Daesh plan to target different civilian areas in Roj Ava (the Kurdish areas in Syria). Daesh sent many civilian cars loaded with TNT and C4 explosives. The cars were brand new and came from Raqqa, Deir Ez-Zor, Manbij and Jarabulus, and they were rigged in a professional way that made them almost undetectable. Daesh planned to detonate the cars according to a certain timetable. The YPG captured many of these cars, but it is likely that there are more, according to YPG sources (There is a video of one of the captured cars.)  [Hawar]
