The leader of Badr militia says if the Americans really want to help against Daesh they should provide “us” with weapons and not participate in the battles. [Waradana]

DaeshDaily comment. Aside from the fact that the gentleman is picking up on an apparently baseless rumor, his comments reflect the anti-American tone of recent militia comments. The Badr militia’s origins and continuing relationship with Iran may be part of the explanation, but it wasn’t always anti-American. We get the feeling some of this is a message of opposition to the Prime Minister for working closely with the US.

The government had been able until recently to control war information and commentary through official media (including the IWMC) without competing (and sometimes self-promoting statements from militia leaders). Lately this is not working. We also notice that the militias seem to be less active than before, at least in Anbar. One point of certainty is that the challenge of dealing with the militia organizations after Daesh goes is a problem already developing.

A security source says unknown armed men shot and killed a mukhtar near his house in Mandali, near the Iranian border east of Balad Ruz. [Baghdadia]

DaeshDaily comment: Mukhtars are local administrative officials. We have reported several attacks on mukhtars in Baghdad and now in Diyala. Assassinating mukhtars and other local leaders is a calculated move by Daesh and other armed groups, because they are the first ones to report unusual activities in their areas. Daesh killed many mukhtars in Mosul before they took over the city.

KIRKUK

A local source says the Coalition bombed Daesh inside Qayara oil refinery, killing 10 and wounding 12 and destroying 9 oil tankers. [Sumaria]

DaeshDaily comment. Qayara is getting a lot of attention from the Coalition, as part of the campaign to reduce Daesh’s oil revenues but also because it is in a largely tribal area where Daesh’s takeover of Mosul got a lot of support and because it is on a plausible path to Mosul when Iraqi forces and the Coalition begin the hoped-for campaign to retake the city.

Local sources say the Daesh office of mosques in Mosul was destroyed in an airstrike, killing “dozens” of terrorists including 2 leaders. [Maalomah]

OTHER GOVERNORATES

Kurdistan

The new Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East moves the Church’s headquarters from Chicago back to Erbil after 80 years outside Iraq. The new Patriarch himself, Gewargis Sliwa, has been living in Iraq, however, as the long-time Metropolitan of Baghdad, staying there through its worst days. [Sumaria]

DaeshDaily comment: This is a bold move by a leader with courage, and might help to keep Christian Iraqis in their country. The Assyrian Church of the East is one of the largest Assyrian Christian denominations.
