DaeshDaily comment: We wonder if this is linked to the booby-trapped chicken we reported some weeks back.

DaeshDaily comment. This optimistic claim seems to be true in general, but it would be more reassuring if they were not “advancing” so often in the same places.

Sistani issued a statement on Saturday repudiating the kidnapping and calling it an aggression against Shia principles and rule of law. [Mada]

Security sources opened an investigation to see how the kidnappers could transport the men from Baghdad to Basra with all the checkpoints on the road. The Turkish Ambassador to Iraq says the 2 men were in good health and all the others are in good condition. Other sources suspect that the 4 unidentified bodies found in Kut (see story below) belong to some of the kidnapped workers. [Iraq Press]

KIRKUK

A security source says Daesh moved 500 of its fighters to Rashad district, 65 km (40 miles) southwest of Kirkuk, preparing to launch an attack on the Peshmerga to regain the ground they just lost. The source also says Daesh intends to burn “black oil” in Zegyaton Valley to create smoke and distract the Iraqi and Coalition pilots. [Mada]

DaeshDaily comment. This is yet another Saddam trick. In Kuwait, Iraq set fire to oil wells to create smoke and impede coalition pilots. For supposedly foreign jihadis, Daesh’s tactics have a remarkable resemblance to those of Saddam’s army.

DaeshDaily comment: Daesh uses these centers to spread its propaganda, especially among young men, and to recruit people. In addition, by publishing these photos they want to show that life is going on as usual in their areas.

OTHER GOVERNORATES

Kurdistan

A KDP official says the Rojava Peshmerga, Syrian Kurd fighters trained by the KRG, will return to Syria. This announcement followed the meeting between the KRG President Barzani and the PYD leader yesterday.

Another KDP official says efforts are ongoing to let in the 3,000 Syrian fighters who are deployed now near Mosul but the PYD is putting up obstacles. [BasNews] A PYD official says there is still no agreement about these forces, citing differences regarding its leadership. [Welati]

DaeshDaily comment. This is all about the complicated politics of the Syrian mess. Turkey does not want to work with the PYD because of its PKK connection, and worries that an emerging Kurdish jurisdiction in Syria will strengthen separatist sentiment among Kurds in Turkey. It has no issues with the KRG-trained Syrian Kurds. The US Coalition has militarily supported the YPG, however, providing heavy air support. The meetings yesterday included the US Ambassador. Barzani is caught in between, trying to stay on the good side of Erdogan and distancing the KRG from the PYD, but also trying to help Kurds in Syria. A force of 3,000 men is significant and potentially valuable on the ground, but the YPG does not want an anti-Daesh force it does not lead and Barzani does not want to put his trainees under the YPG. If all this does not make sense, it’s not our fault.

The Council says the owners will have the right to get back their properties when they return. The “law” was opposed by many members of the Council, especially Assyrians. [BasNews]  Kurdish legal experts say this “law” violates both international and local law. [Welati]
