NATIONAL NEWS

Shuttle diplomacy by US envoy Brett McGurk is credited with brokering an oil deal between Iraq and its Kurdish region that was also vital to getting cooperation on the Mosul campaign. The oil revenue-sharing deal sealed in August was critical to getting the central and regional governments to coordinate planning for the push on Mosul, as soon as this month, the sources said.

McGurk shuttled from Erbil to Baghdad and back again from early April to mid-June, culminating in a June 19 meeting in Erbil with KRG leader Masoud Barzani and Iraqi National Security Advisor Falah Fayad. Barzani reportedly told McGurk “We cannot afford Mosul. We need oil and revenues back,” said a high level source close to the Kurds. “If it wasn’t for McGurk, this deal would have never happened.”

A senior western diplomat says the recent improvement in relations between Baghdad and Erbil accelerated the plans for the Mosul liberation. He says the Kurds will keep Peshmerga out of Mosul city and will allow the Iraqi Army to use areas the Peshmerga controls to launch the attack on the city. [SotKurdistan]

DaeshDaily comment. The government can’t say this is a Sunni politician’s propaganda. This Council Member is a Shi’i.

Daesh’s version says one of its Iraqi suicide terrorists attacked a Shia religious gathering in Hay Al-Amel with an explosives vest, killing or wounding many people. Daesh says at least 100 people were killed in the 2 attacks today. [DawaAlhaq]

DaeshDaily comment. Daesh justifies the attacks by saying the attack is revenge against the Shia for their alleged hostility toward the Prophet’s wives and Sahaba. The same accusation is repeated on a daily basis by the Wahhabi media and religious institutes. These days you can justify killing as many people as you want, using ready-made fatwas from ignorant and politicized clerics from all sides.

DaeshDaily comment. We are following these Diyala stories with alarm. Diyala is supposedly pacified, yet people are being forced to evacuate their homes because the Daesh presence in their area has not been removed. Among all the happy announcements about IDPs returning to their homes, Iraq needs to deal with the people forced to leave their homes.

NINEWA

Mosul

Mosul campaign

The operation to recapture Mosul will be “surprising and overwhelming” according to the chief of Ninewa Governorate Council’s security committee, Muhammad Al-Bayati, who also said that the launch date has not yet been specified. [SotAlIraq]

PMF fighters will surround Mosul but Iraqi Counter-Terrorism troops and Ninewa Police will storm the city in the coming operations to dislodge Daesh, Al-Bayati said. He added that three initial fronts will be opened by Iraqi troops as they attack and others opened as the operations progress. PMFs will be tasked with holding territory as it is taken by the Iraqi troops, according to Al-Bayati. 7,300 fighters of Ninewa’s “tribal mobilization” will also take part in the attack which will be a joint Iraqi-American operation organized from Qayara. The Iraqi 73rd Army Brigade is en route from Ramadi to complete the plan to encircle the city, he added. [AlMirbad]

Meanwhile, the commander of the “Al-Nawadir” fighters of the Al-Shammari tribe announced that PM Abadi has given his troops responsibility for the Western front of Mosul city once operations begin. The tribal force will be responsible for blocking Daesh movement between Raqqa and Mosul. [Ghad]

The Coalition and Iraqi war effort is being conducted in coordination with locally based resistance elements in Mosul, according to Ninewa’s deputy governor, Muhammad Nouri Abd Rabboh. “Iraqi and Coalition airstrikes targeting Daesh are conducted in coordination with the movements” of the resistance inside Mosul. Daesh “Caliph” Awwad Baghdadi and three other Daesh commanders in Daesh’s “Shura Council” have been struck ill with “severe poisoning” according to local source in Ninewa who cited intelligence information. The group took ill after eating in one of Daesh’s guest houses on the Iraqi–Syrian border near Baaj, the source said. Daesh reportedly mobilized its members afterward and conducted an arrest campaign in areas Baghdadi had been, in trying to discover how poison had been brought to the leader. [PressIraq] [BasNews]

DaeshDaily comment. This seems like another Baghdadi “sighting” with no photo. Believe this report if you wish. Daesh issues photos in profusion, so why none of the long-absent caliph? Just add up all the Daesh photos and videos mentioned in just this Daesh Daily report today. What are the chances that they would issue all those and leave the leader out? Or maybe he was too sick for a selfie?

Al-Baghdadi is also reported to have given orders to his followers to destroy Mosul and all documents if they are unable to hold the city in the coming fighting, according to a KDP official. Oerlemans was abducted and wounded in Syria in 2012 with British photographer John Cantlie, and freed a week later. Cantlie was later abducted again, and is believed to still be in captivity. Morocco

The Moroccan Ministry of Interior says it arrested a cell of 10 Daesh female terrorists in different cities and confiscated chemical materials. The Ministry says the cell was planning suicide attacks in the Kingdom. One of the women’s brothers conducted a suicide attack in Iraq early this year. [AfriGate]

DaeshDaily comment. Many countries felt it was a good thing when they got rid of their radicals who left for Iraq in 2003 and after. Now the same countries see that the fire will eventually get back to where it was lit.

Iraq

As the annual Shia Muslim observance of Ashura approaches, which commemorates the martyrdom of Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, Twitter users linked to the Shia-oriented PMFs have been tweeting with the hashtag (In Arabic) “Mobilization In Hussein’s Footsteps,” [Twitter] displaying images and texts that link the mission of the PMFs with Shia imagery or messages. See for example this tweet which links the military images, Shia slogans, and the concept of the PMFs. [Twitter]

An Anti-PMF Twitter user shares a clip of a CNN Arabic report showing a female PMF member who attests that she has cut off and cooked (sic) the heads of Daesh members, voicing his concern over the apparent lawlessness of the PMFs and the power they will have over Iraq. He ventures into sectarian territory calling the woman “a graduate of Sistani’s school.” [Twitter]

With the fresh renewal of Turkish–Iraqi tensions over the presence of Turkish troops on Iraqi soil comes a new hashtag (in Arabic) “The PMFs Terrify the Turks” [Twitter]. Pro-PMF Twitter users have used that tag to share memes disparaging Turkey and its president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and linking them to Daesh, such as this photoshopped image of Erdogan embracing Baghdadi [Twitter] or this one linking Daesh, Erdogan, and the CIA. Syria

Jund Al-Qasa, a Salafi jihad group designated as a terrorist organization by the US, published a video and photos of executing a 13-year-old boy after accusing him of blasphemy. [Twitter] [Twitter]

DaeshDaily comment. This might have been a punishment against the kid’s family. The execution was in public and it was based, of course, on an order from a “judge.” Considering the backgrounds of the “judges” in such groups (the Daesh main “judge” in Mosul was a honey seller), we can see how the Assad regime makes use of such crimes for its propaganda. Assad’s accounts claimed the boy was executed by the “moderate opposition.” Interestingly, Al-Nusra accounts condemned the execution.

Turkey

Erdogan photos and Turkish flags are all over the place in Jarabulus, Syria. The city hospital reports to the Turkish Ministry of Health, and local officials hold their meetings under the Turkish flag and photos of Ataturk on the walls. [Twitter] [Twitter]
