NATIONAL NEWS

The European Union mission in Iraq issued a statement saying the EU stands by Iraqis at this critical time and commends the courage and sacrifices of all Iraqis, in particular those actively taking part in the fight against Daesh. It also says it welcomes the unprecedented unified action to date, under the lead and coordination of central Iraqi authorities, of the Iraqi Army, Federal Police, Counter Terrorism Service, Peshmerga, and Popular Mobilization Forces, with the support of Coalition forces. It says it praises in particular the commitment of all those forces to protect civilians and respect their dignity and human rights throughout this campaign. [EU]

 

UK Ministry of Defense Advisor Imam Hafiz says in a press conference in the UK Embassy in Baghdad that hundreds of UK citizens have joined Daesh. He says the UK government established procedures for preventing citizens from joining Daesh and for capturing the terrorists who have already joined, once they return to the UK. [Rudaw]

 

The Coalition says it conducted 12 airstrikes on Daesh targets in Iraq, eight of them in or near Mosul, the rest in Hawija (1), Haditha (2), and Rawa (1). [InherentResolve]

Falluja

Anbar Police department says it arrested a Daesh terrorist hiding in a tunnel inside a house in Falluja. The man was hiding there for 4 months, where food supplies, some rotten, were also found. [Mada]

 

Col. Jumaa Faza’ Al-Jumaili, a commander in the Anbar Tribal Mobilization, says engineering units in the Cement Factory, east of Falluja, defused 70 IEDs.  [Maalomah]

 

Hit/Haditha

Lt. Col. Nadhem Al-Jughaifi, of the Tribal Mobilization in Haditha, says US troops are inspecting the Haditha Dam area to establish an advance base there. The base will be the second for the US troops in the area after Ayn Al-Asad base near Hit. [ARA]

Security sources in Anbar say Daesh attacked 1st army division positions east of Rutba with 10 vehicle bombs and groups of suicide attackers. The sources say all vehicles were destroyed as the army repelled the terror attack. [ARA]

Shirqat

The Salahuddin Operations Command says its engineering units destroyed 16 IEDs in Tilul Al-Baj, while the 21st infantry brigade found an explosives workshop and a cache. Rafidain Operations units destroyed an armored vehicle, while the IFP destroyed a Daesh vehicle. [MoD Website]

A security source says a civilian was wounded by a Daesh IED in Kirkuk District while he was trying to escape Daesh controlled areas. [Sumaria]

 

Hawija

A local source in Kirkuk says a masked man on a motorcycle shot dead “Abu Jabir,” a photographer of Daesh executions in Hawija.  [Sumaria]

 

Southwest

A Peshmerga commander says 38 Daesh terrorists were killed by Coalition bombing and Peshmerga shelling southwest of Kirkuk. The terrorists were planning on attacking Peshmerga positions in the area. [Rudaw]

 

NINEWA

The IAF destroyed an unspecified number of Daesh sites in Ninewa, according to an MoD statement (video). [MOD Website]

 

The Interior Ministry is accepting applications from volunteers for police work and other duties in Ninewa, according to an MoI statement. Volunteers can apply until the 23rd of this month, the statement said. [IPA]

 

Mosul

Mosul liberation campaign

A Ninewa GC member said that the Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) had captured the neighborhoods of Aden and Tahrir in eastern Mosul. A security source said earlier in the day that the CTS had raided Tahrir, and a CTS officer said the neighborhood was “90 percent” under Iraqi control. The CTS has also seized the Al-Bakr neighborhood, according to the CTS commander, killing “tens” of Daesh militants in the operation. The CTS is now 4 km (2.5 miles) from central Mosul, the CTS commander said. [BasNews] [Baghdadia] [Sumaria] [BasNews]

 

Less sweeping was a statement by a CTS commander that Iraqi forces have captured 80% of Hay Al-Tahrir. [Rudaw]

 

More than eight neighborhoods have been cleared in eastern Mosul, the MoD announced. In the eastern Mosul area, more than 200 Daesh fighters have been killed and 100 vehicle bombs destroyed, while approximately 40,000 or 50,000 civilians remain in their homes as the operation progresses, the MoD announced (video). A COR member from Ninewa says Daesh is heavily shelling the liberated areas on the east side of Mosul, burying entire families in the rubble. [Sumaria]

 

Daesh concedes that Iraqi forces captured the neighborhoods of Al-Zahra, Al-Tisin, and Al-Samah, in addition to parts of Arbajiya, Intisar, Shaima, and Qadisiya Thaniya, since the battles started. [A3maq]

However, Daesh says Iraqi suicide terrorists attacked Iraqi forces near Hay Al-Zahra with a vehicle bomb, killing seventeen Iraqi service members and destroying an Abrams tank and 3 Humvees. [A3maq] [DawaAlhaq]

Daesh also says its snipers killed two Iraqi soldiers and wounded another near Hay Al-Zahra. [A3maq] In another report it says its snipers killed five service members there and wounded two others. Here Daesh says it conducted a suicide attack on Iraqi SWAT forces in Hay Al-Tahrir north of Hay Al-Zahra, destroying an Abrams tank and 3 Humvees. [A3maq]

Daesh reportedly fired Kornet missiles during its counter-attack on Al-Zahra, prompting speculation as to how the group obtained the Russian-made weapons. [BasNews]

 

Here Daesh says a Tajik suicide terrorist attacked Iraqi SWAT forces with a vehicle bomb in Hay Al-Samah, killing 20 fighters and wounding others, and destroying 5 Humvees, and damaging 2. [DawaAlhaq]

 

Here Daesh says it destroyed an Iraqi Army BMP vehicle and a Humvee with rockets near Hay Al-Intisar. [Isdarat]

The Iraqi Army Ninth Armored Division has reportedly reached the Al-Salam neighborhood on the eastern bank of the Tigris, after which it intends to cross the river to conduct operations in the western half of the city. [BasNews]

 

The Iraqi 16th Division is preparing to launch operations on the Al-Arabi and other areas in the north of the city, according to JOC. Daesh is reportedly dug in at that location and operations are expected to be difficult, BasNews reports. The 16th Division destroyed two vehicle bombs on the northern edge of the city, a security source said. [Mada] [BasNews]

 

The CTS evacuated 120 families from multiple areas of Mosul to Al-Khazer IDP camp, a security source said. [Mada]

 

Daesh says it targeted Iraqi forces in several parts of east Mosul and east of Mosul with more than 125 mortars. [Isdarat]

 

Daesh says an Egyptian suicide terrorist attacked Iraqi forces in Sheherazad village in southeast Mosul with a vehicle bomb, killing fifteen service members, destroying four military vehicles and damaging a BMP armored vehicle. [DawaAlhaq]

Yesterday Daesh said it killed thirteen SWAT members in the attack.

Military developments within Mosul

Daesh executed 25 civilians in Mosul on allegations of providing information to government security agencies, according to a media announcement by the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights. Their bodies have reportedly not been released to their families. The victims had reportedly been arrested in the last two days in various parts the governorate. The report also said that Daesh holds approximately 2,000 civilian captives and is attempting to move them toward Tal Afar for use as human shields there. [Waradana] [ROJ]

 

According to another report, Daesh executed 21 civilians in the city after conducting a campaign searching for mobile phones and other communications devices on the grounds that those possessing such devices are suspected of providing information to the security agencies. [BasNews]

 

Daesh executed 17 people from four families in the eastern Mosul neighborhood of Al-Bakr, according to reported remarks by a Ninewa Operations Command officer. The executions reportedly came as reprisals for the families having attempted to protest Daesh control of their neighborhood, according to the officer. [Waradana]

 

A “secret letter” reportedly obtained from Daesh in Mosul and reported by Reuters claims that Daesh “Caliph” Awwad Baghdadi is now never without his suicide vest. The Daesh leader reportedly has neglected his appearance after hiding in tunnels to evade capture and bombing attacks. [Baghdadia]

Daesh has reportedly deployed wooden decoy tanks to draw fire from attacking aircraft, according to a report in Indian media. [Maalomah]

 

In western Mosul Daesh is preparing to deploy young boys as suicide bombers, and its fighters have acquired different clothing to better infiltrate the civilian population, an Iraqi security expert stated. [Mawazin]

 

Conditions in Mosul

A teenage Daesh affiliate reportedly detonated his suicide vest in his home, killing himself and all six members of his family who were present, a local source said. [Sumaria]

 

Video shows the “return to life” of barbershops in the neighborhood of Intisar after the expulsion of Daesh from the area. Daesh’s restrictions on men’s grooming had left the barbershops nearly empty, the reporter says. [Sumaria]

 

Shura/Hammam Alil/Mosul subdistrict

Mosul subdistrict

PMF forces in southwest Mosul subdistrict crossed into Tal Afar today and reportedly captured the Tal Afar Airport. These news items are covered in the Northwest (Tal Afar, Sinjar) section below.

Hammam Al-Alil

The IFP captured the strategically located town of Adhba south of Mosul on Wednesday, which is northwest of Hammam Al-Alil on the main road into Mosul, according to Mosul operations commander Lt. Gen. Abd Al-Amir Rashid Yarallah. [Mada]

 

Daesh has withdrawn to the Albu Saif and Al-Ghazlani areas just south of Mosul’s southern entrance, according to BasNews correspondent. The IFP has reportedly surrounded Albu Saif and has been shelling Daesh there in preparation for storming the town. [BasNews]

 

Iraqi Joint Forces are just 1 km (0.6 miles) from the Mosul airport on the southern front, a Ninewa GC member said. [Mawazin] The airport is on the southeast corner of Mosul.

 

Daesh says a group of its terrorists sneaked into Iraqi forces positions near Hammam Al-Alil and attacked with light weapons and hand grenades, killing or wounding service members. [A3maq] [Isdarat]

 

Daesh says it destroyed an Iraqi forces Humvee near Al-Sada village west of Hammam Al-Alil, killing the service members inside. [A3maq]

Daesh said on Tuesday it destroyed an Iraqi Army amphibian armored vehicle with a missile near Hammam Al-Alil.  [Isdarat]

 

Shura

The IFP captured a Daesh explosives cache in Shura subdistrict, according to a statement issued on social media by the IFP. [Forat]

 

Nineveh Plain

Hamdaniya

Iraqi Armed Forces are continuing the effort to clear the Bartella area of explosives and prepare it for the return of displaced persons, according to an MoD statement (video). [MoD Website]

 

Iraqi troops captured the village of Tal Akoub north of the Zab River near Nimrud, Mosul operations commander Lt. Gen. Abd Al-Amir Rashid Yarallah announced. [Sumaria]

 

Seven Tribal Mobilization fighters were killed by an IED attack near the Nimrud ancient site, according to Tribal Mobilization commander Saad Al-Luhaibi. [Anadolu]

 

The MoD announced the recapture of the archaeological site of Nimrud Hill, but said that Daesh destroyed the site completely. [Sumaria]

 

Tel Keif

A group of residents trapped in Tel Keif district appealed on Sumaria News to the Iraqi government to expedite its liberation of the area, saying residents are facing shortages of food and basic supplies. Airstrikes are not effective against Daesh, the group said, because Daesh fighters are able to seek safety in their tunnels. The Tel Keif residents are not able to deal with their dead and wounded the group said, owing to Daesh’s control of the main roads. [Sumaria]

Northwest (Tal Afar, Sinjar)

PMFs have captured Tal Afar airfield after heavy fighting with Daesh, according to an announcement by Ahmad Al-Asadi the PMF spokesman. Al-Asadi said that the PMFs were now tracking and pursuing Daesh members fleeing the airbase.

The Badr PMF announced earlier that its fighters had reached the “outer fence” of the airfield and were surrounding the facility. Daesh commanders fled toward the Syrian borders, PMF media reported. A field officer from the Hizbullah PMF militia made a similar report. [Maalomah] [Sumaria] [Buratha] [Maalomah]

DaeshDaily comment. There are conflicting reports on the extent to which the airfield has been “captured.” The details should sort out by tomorrow.

 

PMFs captured weapons and rockets inside the airbase, according to the PMF media office. [Ghad]

The Hizbullah PMF militia reported that its intelligence monitored Daesh Turkish-language telephone calls from Tal Afar airfield. [Etejah]

DaeshDaily comment: Without commenting on the militia’s insinuation that Daesh is in contact with Turkish interlocutors, we note that Tal Afar is a Turkmen city and many of its inhabitants converse in the Turkish language, presumably including those who joined Daesh.

 

Daesh mobilized its fighters and all its materiel in areas south of Tal Afar airfield from surrounding areas in a bid to stop the move of the PMFs toward the airport, the PMF authority announced. [Waradana] [Maalomah]

Daesh says a suicide terrorist from Tal Afar attacked a PMF convoy with an explosives vest in Subban, killing or wounding several fighters and destroying a personnel carrier and 4 Humvees. Daesh also says it targeted the PMF positions in the village with more than 100 mortars. [Isdarat]

 

More than 1,000 female Yazidi fighters are taking part in the campaign west of Mosul, according to the commander of the Yazidi Women’s Protection Units. [Ghad]

 

South (Baaj, Hatra)

PMFs have surrounded the village of Al-Hamra, and have destroyed a Daesh vehicle bomb nearby, according to a statement issued by the PMF media office. [Forat]

 

More than 5,000 civilians are reportedly trapped in the Hatra District south of Mosul, according to the district mayor, who says they are trapped between the Daesh lines on one side and the PMFs on the other. [BasNews]

 

KURDISTAN

KRG President Masoud Barzani has rebuffed remarks by Iraqi MPs who said that the Peshmerga would withdraw from areas they liberated from Daesh. The Peshmerga will not withdraw from areas they captured from Daesh, he said. [Arabi21]

 

The southeastern KRG area of Garmian has made preparations to accept 1,000 displaced persons from Ninewa in addition to the 60 families that are already in the area, according to the area’s human rights affairs director. [ROJ]

 

SOUTHERN IRAQ

Babel

Babel Police says three persons wanted on terrorism charges were arrested in the International Highway area north of Hilla.  [Mada]

 

Basra

Basra Judiciary media office says that a convict was executed for a terrorism-motivated murder in Al-Khalis, Diyala seven years ago.  [Sumaria]

 

Muthanna

The Chairman of the Security Committee in Muthanna Provincial Council says the Intelligence Service intercepted communications between Muthanna and Najaf that show Daesh is planning terrorist attacks on Shia pilgrims. He says security units have increased their patrols in the area. [Mada]

 

REPORTS FROM SYRIA

 

Special Presidential Envoy to the Coalition Brett McGurk shared a message from his Twitter account announcing that YPG units will be withdrawing from Manbij and returning to the east side of the Euphrates. He says all YPG units will depart Manbij after training local units to maintain security, describing the move as a milestone. [Birgun]

 

The Coalition says it conducted 10 airstrikes on Daesh targets in Syria: in Shaddadi (2), Ain Eissa (4), Albu Kamal (2), and Deir Ez-Zor (2). [InherentResolve]

 

Northeast (Hasaka, Raqqa)

Hasaka

Asayesh (security) forces of the self-declared Kurdish Autonomous administration broke into the Amude Radio station of the Yekiti party, near Qamishli, and arrested four of its employees, according to a station officials. [Rudaw]

 

Turkish army is building a concrete wall near the village of Kardimiya in the Derik area, on the Syrian side of the border. The Turks are 50-150 m inside Syrian territory in that area. [Hawar]

 

A land mine killed a 15 year old shepherd near the Mount of Kawkab north of Hasaka, local sources say. [ARA]

 

Daesh said on Tuesday it destroyed an SDF bulldozer with a missile in Tal Al-Bashayer, southeast of Shaddadi. [Isdarat]

DaeshDaily comment. One way to tell that Daesh is losing in an area is that its reports start highlighting brave attacks on military equipment.

Raqqa

SDF forces advancing toward Raqqa captured the village of Kheneizi, 28 km (17 miles) west of Qantara amid fierce battles with Daesh fighters. The villages of Tuwayla’a and Tel Al-Saman were also liberated. The SDF spokesman says liberating Raqqa will end war in Syria, adding that the Coalition is supporting the SDF effort all the way. Local sources say Daesh closed Internet cafes and established a new checkpoint in Raqqa. [Rudaw]

Northwest (Aleppo, Idlib)

Aleppo city

Activists in Aleppo describe airstrikes on eastern quarters of the city as frenzied. They say over 50 air raids targeted opposition held areas, killing countless civilians and destroying a hospital. Tens of casualties also are reported as Syrian army and affiliated armed groups initiate an attack to recover eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo under heavy air and artillery cover. Fierce battles broke out near Jam’yat Al-Zahra west of Aleppo city when the Syrian army approached opposition positions in the city. The operation is backed by air attacks by Russian and Syrian warplanes. [ARA]

 

Russian army denied any air attacks in Aleppo, saying that no strike has taken place for 28 days now. Russian MOD spokesman says reports by Al-Jazeera TV, SOHR, and similar sources of attacks on hospitals in Aleppo are “lies.” [Dorar]

Idlib

Syrian warplanes killed two children and wounded four civilians in an airstrike on Al-Habit village in south Idlib. Airstrikes on Khan Shaikhoun also left several civilian casualties, including women and children, while Syrian artillery shelling of Al-Taman’a village also left civilian casualties. [Qasioun]

 

Al-Bab

Turkish backed opposition units withdrew from Qabasin village, just north of Al-Bab city, after entering it earlier. Turkish artillery shelled the Daesh controlled village, killing a child and wounding two civilians. [Hawar] [ROJ]

SDF forces are advancing west from Manbij towards the eastern side of Al-Bab city, engaging Daesh in seven villages east of Qabasin under Coalition air cover, which killed over 50 terrorists.  SDF and Turkish-backed opposition units are both racing to control Al-Bab city. [ARA]

Local activists say Daesh executed two men in Aqirbat subdistrict east of Hama on charges of cooperating with opposition forces.

 

Local activists say Syrian and Russian warplanes attacked Tamina and Tebat Al-Imam among other villages with cluster bombs, while the opposition retaliated by shelling Soran, controlled by governmental forces. [ARA]

 

Fierce battles initiated near Al-Sha’er and Al-Muhur oilfields east of Homs, between Daesh and governmental forces when Daesh initiated an attack on the area. Casualties were reported in both sides without any advances made on the ground, local activists say.
