KURDISTAN

Thousands of government employees, mostly teachers, demonstrated in Suleimaniya, Halabja, Kalar, and Chamchamal, demanding their salaries. [ROJ]

DaeshDaily comment. The severe economic downturn caused by the depressed oil prices has left the KRG unable to pay its employees on time, even for months at a time. However, a major contributing factor is the overdependence on government jobs. It was a long-standing policy of both the KDP and PUK parties to buy political loyalty by handing out government jobs to people who wanted them. KRG ministries were told whom to hire, whether they needed the workers or not. The ministries often became vastly overstaffed, even as they were unable to hire the more skilled workers they really needed. The result was a bloated and inefficient public sector and too little private enterprise to create a balanced economy. The oil crisis made this scheme unaffordable.  Having been bought off by the politicians, the Kurds are now angry at the politicians.

Hundreds of German police have launched coordinated raids this morning in ten of the country’s 16 states, hunting for supporters and recruiters of Islamic State among a Salafist group calling itself ‘The True Religion.

Germany’s Interior Minister Thomas De Maiziere stressed that this is not a move to ban Islamic beliefs, nor distribution of the Koran. He said: “[The] ban is not for Islamic beliefs; in general, Muslim life has a secure place in German society; freedom of religion is for everyone.”Handing out [the] Koran is not banned, since it’s like handing out the Bible, but misusing [this practice] to propagate Islam is banned.”

Of those targeted, Mr. De Maiziere said: “They believe there are two opposing camps in our society: the true Islamists and the infidels who are the enemies.
