REPORTS FROM IRAQ

NATIONAL NEWS

Prime Minister Abadi’s media office says some demonstrators attacked security personnel with fire torches, but security has the situation under control. [Mada]

An MoI source says hundreds of demonstrators tried to cross to the Green Zone but were stopped by security forces. The demonstrators left Tahrir Square later. [Mada]

Hundreds of Sadrists arrived in Tahrir Square to demand more reforms. [Mada]

DaeshDaily comment. The “reforms” here might mean an extra ministry for the Sadrists.

The Governor of Baghdad, a Sadrist, criticized the security forces’ use of rubber bullets, water and tear gas against the demonstrators in Baghdad and said the demonstrators were trying to show their support to Iraqi forces in Falluja battle. [Mada]

DaeshDaily comment. They could better show their support by not diverting military resources from the battlefield to Baghdad to deal with them.

There were small pro-reform demonstrations in Najaf, Kerbala, Babel, Dhi Qar, Basra, and Muthanna. [Mada]

In Friday’s prayer in Kerbala, the Sistani rep repeated the marji’ya request for the security forces to protect civilians in Falluja battles. He also praised the Iraqi forces, volunteers and tribal fighters in the battle. [Sumaria] [Sumaria]

The MoI spokesman warns that Daesh will try to conduct suicide attacks in Baghdad to distract attention from its losses in the Falluja battles. [Maalomah]

The Combined Joint Task Force says the Coalition conducted 23 airstrikes yesterday on Daesh in Iraq, near Falluja (5), Habbaniya (2), and Baghdadi; near Hawija: and near Mosul (8), Qayara, Kasik (2), Tal Afar (2) and Sinjar. [CJTF]

DaeshDaily comment. We at Daesh Daily confess to having lost patience with these daily CJTF reports. We eventually figured out that the geographic locations given for the airstrikes are always the same and so there is no way to tell what locations were actually targeted. This is passing for public information. Sinjar is a whole district; so is Tal Afar. Kasik is a specific location and always on the list, but the actual airstrike locations are not even approximated. Using the word “near” does not excuse this bad habit. This is PR, not war reporting. We think the CJTF can do better.

An MoI source says an IED exploded near a market in Abu Ghraib, killing two people and wounding seven. [Mada] Daesh says it detonated the IED on an Iraqi vehicle loaded with soldiers. [A3maq]

DaeshDaily comment. This is routine Daesh propaganda. It kills civilians indiscriminately but always claims to be attacking soldiers or PMFs, creating the lie that it is attacking legitimate military targets.

ANBAR

Falluja

U.S.-led coalition strikes supporting Iraqi forces in the recapture of Falluja have killed 70 Daesh terrorists including the group’s commander in the city, a U.S military spokesman said on Friday.

U.S. Army Colonel Steve Warren, a spokesman for the U.S.-led military campaign against Daesh, said the coalition had carried out 20 strikes in support of the campaign over the past four days.

Maher Al-Bilawi, commander of Daesh in Falluja, was killed two days ago, Warren said. He said the killing of Bilawi and the other militants “won’t completely cause the enemy to stop fighting but it’s a blow.” [Reuters]

Warren also says the Coalition dropped leaflets on Falluja asking people to raise white flags on their houses. He also says Iraqi forces established camps for the displaced families. [Mawazin]

A PUK official says Daesh is searching Mosul, looking for terrorists who escaped from the Falluja battles. [PUKMedia]

As Iraqi forces move closer to retaking the city, the efforts by sectarian Sunni media trying to prevent this have accelerated. There was a series of propaganda pieces masquerading as news. For example:

“Media reports” say that several people in Falluja were “martyred” or wounded because of heavy shelling and rocketing by “Abadi forces”. [IslamMemo]

“Media sources” say the current war waged on Falluja by “Abadi forces,” supported by Shia militias, are solely motivated by Shia hatred toward the Sunnis. [IslamMemo]

“Sources” in Falluja city and “Eyewitnesses” say Shia militias blew up the Qarma mosque and the Directorate of National Registration in Qarma, and also burned down another mosque in Rashad. The “sources” also say the Shia militias are looting and burning down houses in Qarma. [IslamMemo]

The Geneva International Centre for Justice issued an urgent call to the General Secretary and all international organizations to stop the “genocide” against the Falluja people that is happening under the guise of fighting Daesh. The Center says the current campaign on the city is being carried out with American coverage and Iranian support and is being led by sectarian militias. [IslamMemo]

DaeshDaily comment. These are samples of the petro-dollar media reporting on Iraq. It pretends that Daesh doesn’t exist, so it can pretend that the shelling targets only civilians. Second, notice that anyone killed in Falluja is “martyred,” but the civilian victims of Daesh suicide attacks, whether Sunni or Shia, are “killed.” This is exactly the language used by Daesh.

The esteemed journalists quote “media reports” and “media sources” without giving any information about what or whom that means. Iraqi forces are not Iraqi forces; they are Abadi’s forces. Many thought the sectarian Arab media would cool down after Maliki was gone, but instead its propaganda has replaced “Maliki forces” with “Abadi forces,” both terms being synonymous with “Shia forces.” The language is totally sectarian. As for the Geneva International Centre for Justice, no one remembers that it issued any “urgent” appeals for justice when tens of thousands of Iraqis were killed, mutilated, and enslaved by Daesh.

Unfortunately, this kind of reporting is not unusual. It’s the norm in the Arab media. As the Falluja campaign proceeds, this obvious propaganda campaign will turn up the heat on every decision-maker and opinion leader who might combine to force Iraq to stop its military effort in Falluja campaign and let Daesh stay. How many people in Iraq need to die before this hate machine stops?

North. The Chairman of Khaldiya subdistrict council says Iraqi forces completely isolated Falluja from the north, cutting off the last Daesh road to the city. [Maalomah]

DIYALA

Baquba

The Chairman of the Abbara subdistrict council says the Diyala tribes have been holding meetings for days now to agree on the ceiling for the tribal compensations for murder and terrorism crimes. [Sumaria]

DaeshDaily comment. This is an important step towards reconciliation in Diyala, by applying tribal law. The most important outcome will be that the people who had relatives murdered will get compensated in money collected from the murderer’s family by his tribe, after negotiations with the victims’ tribe, in return for which they will waive their right to exact further punishment. This will get some perpetrators off the hook, and make the justice system’s punishments less severe on others.

There will be thousands of such situations across Iraq, and the court system cannot handle all the prosecutions that would be needed to provide justice to victims and their families. Transitional justice is essential to reconciliation, however. Tribal law is the old-fashioned way, but it still works.

A security source says unknown armed men shot and killed a mukhtar and his son, and wounded his daughter severely, in Abbara. [Sumaria]

Daesh says it killed a Sahwa commander in Abbara and his son in their house. [JustPaste]

DaeshDaily comment. Daesh didn’t mention the daughter. Notice again that Daesh creates a lie that they attacked a Sunni military target, when the targets were actually a civilian official and his children. As a girl would not be a combatant, she is left out of their story so as not to reduce its credibility.

NINEWA

Mosul

UNHCR spokesperson Melissa Fleming says the past month has seen a spike in numbers of Iraqi refugees risking the dangerous crossing into Syria in a desperate bid to escape Mosul, the pending battle to retake it, and fighting in surrounding areas. Since the beginning of May, a total of 4,266 refugees have arrived at the Al-Hawl camp located 14 km (9 miles) from the Iraqi border in Syria’s northeastern Hasaka Governorate.

She also says people continue to flee ongoing fighting southeast of Mosul, mainly in the Makhmur District, to the recently established Debaga IDP camp in Makhmur city. Local authorities estimate that an additional 30,000 people could be displaced in the coming months. An eventual assault on Mosul could displace over 600,000 people. [UNHCR]

The IWMC says the IAF conducted airstrikes on Daesh in Mosul, killing “tens” of terrorists, including the Daesh officer responsible for suicide terrorists, the Daesh sharia official of Ninewa, and the finance officer of Ninewa. The IWMC advised Mosul citizens to stay away from Daesh positions. [Rudaw]

The Iraqi Observatory for Journalism Freedom says Daesh beheaded Talal Abu Iman, a technician for the Iraqi Media Network in Ninewa, one month after he was captured. [Sumaria]

DaeshDaily comment. Considering these two stories together tells you a lot about Daesh and its hypocrisy.

REPORTS FROM SYRIA

Leaked Daesh files have revealed the group’s so-called “borders chief”, a senior leader responsible for recruiting thousands of foreign jihadists and funneling them into Syria. Tarad Mohamed Al-Jaraba, a 37-year-old Iraqi national who uses the nom de guerre Abu Mohamed Al-Shimali, facilitated the entry of more than 6,000 terrorists over two years.

A third of the 18,000 foreign jihadists who joined the group between 2013 and 2015 put Jaraba down as a “mediator” on their entrance forms, which were leaked to the Syrian opposition newspaper Zaman Al-Wasl and shared with the Telegraph. He is understood to have helped several of the Paris bombers get into and then out of Syria to carry out their deadly attacks, killing 130. Jaraba, who also holds Saudi Arabian citizenship, is already known to the US State Department, which offered a reward of $5 million (£3.3 million) for information on his whereabouts earlier this year. [Telegraph]

DaeshDaily comment. Al-Jarba (and not Al-Jaraba) is a famous family in the Ninewa area. It is the leading family of the Shammar, one of the biggest Arab tribes in Iraq, Syria, the Gulf, and other places. The former Iraqi President Ghazi Al-Yawer is a member of this family.
