The New Syria Army is an opposition group established in November, 2015, consisting of hundreds of fighters from Deir Ez-Zor and Homs, and trained by the Coalition in Jordan. The attack aims to close the Daesh-controlled road between Syria and Iraq, and there are reports about military preparations on the other side of the border in far western Anbar to start a similar operation. [Masalah]

The spokesman of the New Syria Army says Iraqi Counter Terrorism troops and tribal fighters are participating in the operation from the Iraqi side. He says Iraqi forces advanced from Haditha towards Rawa. [Al-Aan]

DaeshDaily comment. These developments confirm our hunch that the overall military strategy foresees the convergence of the anti-Daesh campaigns in western Anbar and eastern Syria. Albu Kamal (often just called Bukamal) is a city and subdistrict just across the river from Al-Qa’im. Seemingly all the fighting in Deir Ez-Zor has been the constant and nasty conflict between the Syrian Army, supported by Russian warplanes, and Daesh. Now the Coalition-trained New Syria Army and Coalition bombers have shown up in areas along the Syria-Iraq border. We suspect the Iraqi Army will soon show up in Al-Qa’im. Raqqa is up the river from Bukamal, down the river from Manbij.

The spokesman of the New Syria Army says they aim to capture Albu Kamal, then head toward Deir Ez-Zor. The media center of the Army publishes a photo saying, “We are coming, Daesh…this time from the sky.” This message implies that the attack will involve airdrop operations. [Dorar]
