Elsewhere in Anbar

The Badr militia commander meets with Albu Ajeel tribal leader in Tikrit and agrees to let the displaced families return to their houses in Albu Ajeel in Tikrit. Badr will form a PMF unit to protect the area.

DaeshDaily comment. Many southern tribes accuse Albu Ajeel of committing the Speicher massacre.

A Turkmen MP asks the government to establish a military operations command for the Tuz area, after the suicide attack last week. He says Turkmen Iraqis are paying for the dispute between Baghdad and Erbil, which led to security confusion in Tuz. [Al-Ghad]

BAGHDAD

The Iraqi Parliament issues a statement condemning Turkey’s bombing of Iraqi villages and violation of Iraqi airspace. [Al-Maalomah] Iraqi Council of Ministers also issued statement calling the Turkish attack “a dangerous escalation and an assault on Iraqi sovereignty”. [Al-Maalomah] A Kurdish MP in the Iraqi Parliament says the Turkish bombing aims at putting Daesh and the PKK at the same terrorism level. He says Erdogan’s party broke the truce with PKK that saved a lot of blood. [Al-Maalomah]

DaeshDaily comment. The posturing will continue as long as presumed political advantage can be gained from it.

A news-making explanation from the spokesman for Prime Minister Abadi: He refutes the reports about the participation of Arab nations in the bombing against Daesh in Iraq. He says no Arab airpower has ever participated in any anti-Daesh airstrike in Iraq. He also says the Coalition launches airstrikes after getting initial approvals from Iraq and after getting information from Iraqi intelligence sources. [Al-Mada]

DaeshDaily comment. When the airpower coalition was announced in Washington, the participation of Arab states was the focus. If the PM’s spokesman has it right, all the Coalition airstrikes in Iraq are by US and other western aircraft; all the Arab-nation airstrikes are confined to Syria. The unspoken part of this dialogue is that some Shia leaders don’t have confidence that all the Sunni Arab governments are on Iraq’s side, due to sectarian motives.

The Iraqi government discusses minimizing the numbers of the security personnel allocated for Iraqi officials. There are 18 military regiments allocated for just the Prime Minister, President, and parliament Speaker and their deputies. [Al-Mada] An Iraqi MP says Iraqi officials’ security guards should be taken to the front lines to fight if they want to keep receiving their salaries. [Iraq Press]

DaeshDaily Comment: Reform should be encouraged. The number of security personnel allocated to Iraqi officials is incredible. In addition to the three top leaders and their offices, there are 29 ministers, 22 chairmen of independent commissions, 328 MPs, 18 governors, and thousands of military and police commanders, general directors, local officials, etc., not to mention former office-holders. The number of police and army personnel in these guard units is in the tens of thousands, all paid by the Iraqi budget. Most are recruited based on their family or political ties, which means there are fewer positions for those who want to serve in real military units that can defend the country. It’s a form of corruption, the more so for positions assigned to “ghost soldiers” whose salaries are paid to others. This is not to say the officials don’t need security, because there is a constant risk of being attacked.

REPORTS FROM SYRIA

Burkan Al-Furat soldiers, supported by Coalition airpower, captured Sarrin. (Burkan Al-Furat combines YPG and Free Syrian Army units.) This means Daesh has now been kicked out of the entire Kobane district. [Rudaw] The YPG says they killed 80 Daesh terrorists in Sarrin and confiscated 10 vehicles, 10 car bombs, 3 trucks loaded with weapons, and 60 motorcycles. However, 9 Kurdish fighters were killed in the battles. [BasNews]

YPG soldiers raised their flags on Najm historic castle 2 km west of Sarrin, on the road to Aleppo. [Hawar]

The YPG also claims to have liberated 95% of Hasaka and are promising to liberate the rest in the coming hours. [Welati]

The spokesman of the YPG refutes reports that Syrian Kurdish fighters killed 2 policemen in Turkey. He says the Turkish borders on their side were the safest for Turkey, while Daesh terrorists crossed the Turkish border from Turkey and attacked them. He also says they have nothing to do with the clashes inside Turkey lands. [Hawar]

DaeshDaily comment. This is a critical moment for the YPG and its political party, the PYD. The Kurds are having notable military success against Daesh, and the alliance with the Free Syrian Army could be significant for both. Turkey’s intervention against Daesh further changes the military equation in northern Syria. However, the PYD/YPG relationship with the PKK is now a much bigger liability due to PKK’s renewed hostilities with Turkey, and this could put its recent gains at risk.
