NATIONAL NEWS
A survey of mass graves in Syria and Iraq has identified 72 sites in which Daesh buried victims of its atrocities. As many as 15,000 victims of genocide and mass slaughter may be buried in these sites, based on a comprehensive assessment by the Associated Press.
The figures are based on documentation and mapping of the 72 sites as well as excavations by Iraqi officials, survivor testimony, Daesh propaganda, and analysis of the ground where the victims were buried.
The numbers offer the clearest evidence yet of the scale of Daesh’s crimes as it eliminated enemies and minorities to establish its strongholds in Syria and then Iraq. Further mass graves are expected to be uncovered as Daesh retreats in the face of offensives by a US-led coalition and allied forces on the ground in Iraq and Syria.
The study identified 17 mass graves in Syria alone, one with hundreds of members of a single tribe that was largely exterminated when Daesh seized the area. Sinjar Mountain, in Ninewa, where the Yazidis took refuge as the terrorists raided their ancestral home, contains six burial sites and more than 100 bodies. Some areas where mass graves were uncovered are still too dangerous for a comprehensive excavation that would provide an accurate count of the victims.
The report published in The Guardian notes that Daesh has flaunted its mass atrocities, publishing propaganda videos and images of its crimes. Three other mass murders already well documented are
the June 2014 Camp Speicher massacre in Tikrit, when Daesh murdered more than 1,500 Shia army cadets, the August 2014 massacre of more than 700 members of the Shaitat tribe in eastern Syria, and the summer 2014 rampage that killed 600 inmates at the Badoush prison near Mosul, their bodies likely in a grave just outside the prison. DaeshDaily comment. Iraq hasn’t finished exhuming Saddam’s mass graves yet. Obviously Daesh is depending on Saddam’s “experts” in this field.
Once Daesh is dislodged from all its Iraq territory, one of the government’s top priorities should be to comprehensively document all the mass graves and the atrocities that caused them, and seek justice for the family members who lost their loved ones, by bringing to justice as many as possible of those who supported Daesh in these crimes. Trials and executions have been ongoing for some time over the Camp Speicher massacre. The mass graves also symbolize the betrayal and sellout of some Iraqis by others, for which tribal and legal recourse will be applied on a mass scale to establish a measure of accountability. All of this will put a major strain on the justice system.
Iraq is on track to meet its objective of retaking Mosul from Daesh later this year, says the top general in the U.S. military’s Central Command. “It’s the prime minister’s objective to have that done by the end of the year,” said General Joseph Votel. CENTCOM oversees U.S. forces in the Middle East. Votel said momentum had firmly shifted against Daesh as it loses territory in its self-proclaimed “caliphate.”
Votel said the battle for Mosul could present a mixed picture for war planners, with Daesh retreating in some areas only to reinforce in others. “(Daesh) is having to make hard decisions, because they’re being pressured in a variety of ways,” Votel said. He pointed to the 2½ month battle by U.S.-backed forces in Syria to take back Manbij from Daesh as an example of how fighting could become protracted. “We should expect that in some places, perhaps in some parts of Mosul, they will cede that area to us, to the coalition, to the Iraqis. And then in other areas, they will fight harder to hold onto that,” Votel said. [Reuters]
General Votel says the Peshmerga will participate in liberating Mosul and he had discussed this with the KRG President, Masoud Barzani. [ARA]
Speaker Jubouri met with the KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani to discuss several issues including the preparations for the upcoming Ninewa battles, and the relationship between the central government and the KRG, according to a statement from the Speaker’s office. [ROJ]

In a bizarre and sad story, a local source says Daesh captured one of its fighters on the west side of Mosul and accused him of homosexuality. The source says the fighter, from an Arab country, was actually responsible for executing many young men in Mosul for homosexuality during the last few months. The source says those victims were forced by torture to give “confessions.” [Sumaria]

Witnesses and relatives told Human Rights Watch that two tribal militias recruited as fighters at least seven children from the Debaga camp on August 14, 2016, and drove them to a town closer to Mosul. These two militias are made up of local Sunni fighters and expected to play a key role in Mosul military operations. [HRW]

REPORTS FROM TURKEY
After last week’s anti-Daesh raid in Ankara that led to 17 arrests, it was discovered that Daesh was using a five-story building on Ulucanlar Street as an “education” center. It appears that 30 children, 25 of them girls, were boarding in these rooms. The students were between 9 and 17. The organization was paying 4,000 lira in monthly rent for the building.
It has also been reported that Daesh members in Ankara have shaved off their beards and are making ends meet by working as street vendors. A small building that the organization used for discussion meetings in Hacıbayram quarter is said to have been demolished. [Cumhuriyet]

Daesh says its spokesman, Taha Falaha, AKA Adnani, was killed while checking in on military operations in Aleppo. [DawaAlhaq]
Coalition forces have not confirmed his death but the Pentagon acknowledged that he was targeted in a precision strike on Tuesday near Al-Bab, Syria. “We are still assessing the results of the strike, but Adnani’s removal from the battlefield would mark another significant blow to (Daesh),” said Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook in a statement. Falaha was born in 1977 in Idlib in Syria and lived for a while in Haditha in Iraq. He was captured in Iraq in 2005 by the Coalition, but then was released. [EnabBaladi]

The office of the US Special Envoy for Syria issued a statement denying Russian media reports about a Russia-US agreement to target fighters in Aleppo or to evacuate fighters from the city. It says the US has not begun to coordinate with Russia or Syria–militarily or otherwise. It says that wouldn’t make sense without Russia fulfilling its obligations in Syria. It says the US and Russia have not reached an agreement, but are working on agreements that, if achieved, will bring about the cessation of hostilities and save lives. [Dorar]
French President Francois Hollande on Tuesday criticized Turkey’s “contradictory” military intervention in Syria and warned Russia not to become a “protagonist” in the war. In a speech Tuesday, Hollande said “multiple, contradictory interventions carry the risk of a general inflammation” of the fighting that has devastated the country.
He said he could understand Turkey’s concern about protecting its borders and fighting Daesh, but criticized Ankara’s actions against Kurdish rebels allied with the US-led coalition who are fighting the extremists. [FirstStep]

Colonel John Thomas, a spokesman for CENTCOM, confirmed the news about the truce and told Agence France Presse, “It’s a loose agreement for at least the next couple of days, and we are hoping that it will solidify. “In the last hours we have received assurance that all involved parties will stop shooting at each other and focus on the Daesh threat”.
The Presidential Commission of the Syrian Democratic Council issued a statement saying Turkey has killed around one hundred civilians, including women and children, and kidnapped and killed an entire family in the Jarabulus area, and asked the international community to intervene. It appears that at least some Arab units in the SDF did not move east across the river with the YPG. Daesh probably saw a weakness it could exploit, and attacked the SDF, only to get beat.

Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, has provoked an outcry after it automatically translated “Daesh” as “Saudi Arabia.”
The incident has led representatives of Saudi Arabia’s monarchy, as well as many members of the public, to demand a complete national boycott of the search engine.
Social media users first spotted the mistake, which soon went viral as people complained about the translation–with some describing it as an “insult”. People of the Wadi Jaref 30 km (19 miles) south of Sirte refused the National Accord Government military orders to evacuate areas between 50km west and 50km east of Sirte city and consider it a military operations area.
