Daesh is struggling to stay financially viable after Coalition airstrikes destroyed up to $800 million of Daesh’s cash reserves, according to Major General Peter Gersten, the U.S. deputy commander for operations and intelligence against Daesh. He said on Tuesday that around 20 airstrikes had been conducted that attacked cash stockpiles specifically, destroying between $500 million to $800 million. In one incident, an estimated $150 million was destroyed by an airstrike on a house in Mosul. [Sumaria]

The Iraqi Government cancelled the license for Al-Jazeera and closed its offices in Baghdad. The reason given was that it violated the government’s instructions regarding coverage of the war. [Arabi21]

DaeshDaily comment. Al-Jazeera is the only media organization, other than Daesh’s own, that has access to Daesh controlled areas, especially Falluja. It has produced many videos from those areas, and it’s fair for the government to ask Al-Jazeera how it could do that. Al-Jazeera’s links to Daesh and the AQI are well known, and its enmity towards the political system in Iraq goes beyond any real journalism boundaries. Iraq apparently sees that Al-Jazeera is an important component of the pro-Daesh parallel media and too often a Daesh mouthpiece, so has decided to do something about it.

The Coalition military forces conducted 23 airstrikes in Iraq, in or near Baghdadi, Hit, and Falluja (3); Baiji (2) and Kirkuk; Sinjar, Tal Afar (3), Kasik, Mosul (5), Qayara (4), and Sultan Abdullah. [CJTF]

DaeshDaily comment. As the purpose is to have a cabinet that is more politically independent, nominations by politicians would seem to be inconsistent with the purpose. The blunt message in this and other Kurdish moves is that they oppose Al-Abadi’s cabinet reform and continue to insist on maintaining their quota and on naming the ministers within that quota, forcing the Prime Minister to work with ministers who are not loyal to him and the government as a whole.

Algeria

Algerian authorities sentenced a Daesh member who fought in Syria to 10 years in prison. The terrorist returned to be treated for a wound. [VetoGate]

DaeshDaily comment. We don’t know what specific crimes this terrorist committed, but 10 years seems like a light sentence for someone who joins a mass murder organization like Daesh or Al-Qaeda. How many people would he have had to kill to get a lifetime sentence? Conceding that defendants are sentenced under national legislation, we wonder if the international legal community should consider establishing some international guidelines to deal with this problem.

Other countries

Sweden

Iraqi security officials warned their Swedish counterparts that 7 or 8 terrorists are planning an attack against civilians.  The Swedish police said the information “cannot be ignored,” and it is working closely with national and international partners on the issue. [Mada]

DaeshDaily comment. With Daesh losses, in Iraq a lot of its local and foreign terrorists are leaving, and many are heading to the West. It is important to establish joint intelligence cells with Iraqi security forces to deal with this issue.
